How To: Sit
Sits (4 Easy Steps)
Things You Will Need:
Treats
Dog
Patience
Grab A Handful Of Treats And Let Your Dog Eat The Treats Out Of Your Hand
Now Try Luring Your Dog With The Treats. What That Means Is, Place Treats In Your Hand, Close Your Hand Enough To Have Your Dog Sniff Them & Try To Get Them But Can't Quite Get To Them. Like So,
When Your Dog Is Pushing Into Your Hand, Trying To Get The Treats, You Move Your Hand Slowly Away From The Dog. Ideally, You Never Want To Have A Gap Between Your Hand & Your Dog. The Motion Of Your Dog Following Food From Your Hand While You Move Your Hand Away Or Forward Is What’s Called Luring.
Once You’ve Done Enough Repetitions Where Your Dog Follows Food From Your Hand With No Problem You’re Ready To Teach A Sit.
First Thing You Need To Know, To Teach A Sit Is You Need To Have A System Of Communication With You & Your Dog. Something That Let’s The Dog Know When He Got Something Right/Wrong, How Long To Keep Doing That, & When It’s Okay For The Dog To Be Done With That. We Call These Markers,
“Good” Used For Duration, Means I Like What You’re Doing But Keep Doing It
“No” Used When The Dog Gets Something Wrong, But Must Be Immediately Followed By What They Got Wrong. & You Have To Help Them Get It Right.
“All Done” Used To Let Them Know They’re Done, Allowed To Be Freed
So Now That You Know What Markers Are, You Are Ready To Begin!
Step 1: Get A Small Handful Of Treats, Have Your Dog Sniff Them But Don’t Let Your Dog Eat Them Just Yet. Now Bring Those Treats Up To Your Chest. The Moment Your Dog Sits, You Must Say “Good” Which Allows The Dog To Know They Got Something Right. It’s Very Important To Say “Good” The Moment Your Dog’s Butt Touches The Ground Or Else They May Think You’re Rewarding Them For Something Else. So, You Bring Your Treat Up Towards Your Chest, Your Dog Sits, You Say “Good” And You Give Your Dog A Treat While It Sits.

Step 2: Now We Add An “All Done” At The End To Let Your Dog Know That The Sit Is Over & Hes Allowed To Get Up. What That Looks Like Is, Bring The Treats Towards Your Dog, Let The Dog Know They’re There, Bring The Treats Up Towards Your Chest, The Moment The Dog Sits You Say “Good” Then Give The Dog A Treat & Now You Say “All Done”. And The Exercise Is Finished.
Step 3: Now That You’ve Done Plenty Of These Sits, And Have Said “All Done” To Let Your Dog Know Hes Freed From That Sit. You Can Start Saying “Sit” Before Bringing Your Treats Up Towards Your Chest. Important Things To Remember Here, Just Say “Sit” Once, If You Keep Saying “Sit,Sit,Sit” It Just Becomes Noise. If Your Dog Is Having A Hard Time, Give Your Dog A Little Break
TroubleShoot,
Now What Happens If Your Dog Gets Up Before You Say "All Done"? Simply Say “No, Sit” And Bring Your Treats Back Up To Your Chest, Say “Good” As Soon As They Sit. But This Time Do Not Give Them A Treat Because They Got It Wrong. Instead Just Release Them By Saying “All Done” & Start Over. Some Dogs May Have Trouble With This So You Can Help Them Out By Bringing Them Into A Sit, Saying “Good” & Immediately Releasing Them. You Can Throw Treats On The Ground And Celebrate. Then Get Back Into It
Step 4: Practice These Sits Everywhere You Can, In Your Living Room, Kitchen, Garage, Driveway, Backyard. Start Off Somewhere Easy For Your Dog, If There’s Kids Running Around, Loud Noises, Or Other Dogs Try Finding A Different Spot For Now Till They’re Ready
