How To: Spin

Spin (5 Easy Steps)

Things You Will Need:

  • Treats

  • Dog

Place A Few Treats In Your Hand , Put Your Thumb Over The Treats So That Your Dog Can Sniff & Lick Them But Can't Quite Get Them. Like So,

Now You're Ready To Begin,

Step 1: To Teach A Spin You Want To Make Sure Your Dog Is Standing & Not Sitting. It's Difficult For Your Dog To Spin If It's Sitting. Hold The Treats In Front Of Your Dog's Nose,

Step 2: Slowly, Move The Treats Toward The Side Of Their Head. Your Dog Will Have To Turn Their Head In Order To Follow The Treat. It's Important That You Don't Separate Your Hand With Treats, Away From Their Nose. If There's Too Much Of A Gap Between Your Hand & Their Nose, They Can Lose Interest.

Keep Moving Your Treat Hand In A Circle All The Way Around Your Dog, Your Dog Will Have To Spin In Order To Get The Treats. (Feel Free To Reward Even For Little Advances. In This Particular Example, We Don't Reward Sam Until She Has Completed The Behavior But That's Only Because She Knows It.)

Step 3: Watch Closely For This Next Step, As You're Finishing Up Your Circle, You Want To Flip Your Wrist Back With Your Palm Facing Your Dog. This Will Help You Complete The Spin & Finish With Your Dog Facing You. This May Take A Couple Of Tries So Be Patient. Again, It Is Important That Your Hand Doesn't Separate Too Far From Your Dog's Nose.

Step 4: Now That Your Dog Has Completed The Spin You Let Them Know They Got It Correct By Simply Saying "Yes" & Rewarding Them With Treats

Step 5: Repeat This Multiple Times So Your Dog Has A Good Grasp Of This Behavior. Once Your Dog Is Following Your Hand Easily & You Feel Natural Rotating Your Hand, Add The Word "Spin" Before You Start This Behavior,

Pro Tips:

Spend No More Than Five Minutes A Day Practicing The Spin. If Your Dog Tends To Wander Off, Put A Leash On Them. Be Patient, Not All Dogs Are The Same, Some Require More Time. Smelly Treats Work Best!
